Hello and welcome to our blog!
By way of introduction, we are four teachers who are all working within the DC Public Charter School system. We are all in the process of getting our Masters degree in Early Childhood Education and are in our second year of teaching.
We have found ourselves disenchanted with and unimpressed by the Public Charter School movement as a whole in the District of Columbia. An idea that could have potential in this city has turned into a second problem for the education of our youth, particularly in terms of student achievement. This blog is our attempt to understand this issue, work through problems and potential solutions to the challenges that face DC Public Charter Schools (PCS), share experiences, and brainstorm ways that we can affect change in the PCS community. We are single-mindedly in pursuit of better education, better options, and better opportunities for the students of the District of Columbia, and believe that Public Charter Schools can help if oversight and support for these schools are improved.
Please feel free to comment or share any experiences, issues, or ideas that you have had either working in education or learning about the national charter school movement. We hope that this can be a constructive space to impact the greater DC PCS movement and promote academic achievement and success.
Thanks for your activism and your participation!

I work at a charter school in Northeast DC that is now in it's 11th year. During those 11 years, the charter has not reached AYP a single time. In trying to figure out how that is possible, I have attended my schools board meetings this year. When time came for the DC Public Charter Board to renew our school's charter, the head of the board assured the school that although we once again did not reach the target (with only 40% of our students proficient in math and reading), they board "understood" and would most likely renew the charter. I have a feeling this is not a unique situation and am curious to hear about how other people have seen the charter renewal process play out at their schools...
